The League "Cloud Animals" - White IPA Recipe Kit (All Grain)

    1 Review(s)

This recipe uses some ingredients that are not included and must be sourced locally - coriander seeds and orange zest. See the recipe for details.

This recipe has been designed to be consistent with the 2021 BJCP Style guide 21B - Specialty IPA: White IPA.

Cloud Animals is a recipe created for The League of Brewers by Jamie McQuillan of Cell Division Brewery.

A white IPA is a very recent style. They were first conceived in 2010 as a collaboration between American Larry Sidor of Deschutes Brewery, Oregon, and Belgian-born Steven Pauwels of Boulevard Brewing. Their efforts to meld elements of both an IPA and Belgian wit gained enough popularity to quickly develop into a new beer style.

True to style, Cloud Animals offers a fruity, spicy, lighter and more refreshing version of an American IPA with a soft cushioning body and cloudy appearance. Lightly spiced with coriander and orange peel and providing characteristic Belgian wit esters, this beer has a refreshing level of bitterness with a moderately dry finish. It’s not hard to imagine why something this deliciously drinkable quickly gained popularity. It delivers the best that IPAs and wit beers have to offer all wrapped up in one tasty package. Cheers!

  2. The League "Last Orders" - English IPA Recipe Kit (All Grain)
    $81.50

The League "Last Orders" - English IPA Recipe Kit (All Grain)

This recipe has been designed to be consistent with the 2021 BJCP Style guide 12C - English IPA.

Last orders is a recipe created for The League of Brewers by Jamie McQuillan of Cell Division Brewery.

The English IPA has its roots in the 1700s as a highly hopped stock ale shipped to India, and the modern version of this style is based on a re-imagining of the style by craft breweries in the 1980s.

You should expect a moderately-strong, very well-attenuated pale British ale with a dry finish, hoppy aroma and flavour, and a firm bitterness. This version is built upon a classic malt bill of Marris Otter, and cushioned with a touch of biscuit, crystal and dextrin (Gladiator) malts, bringing body and balancing the malt without lingering sweetness. Firmly bittered with British target hops, followed by generous later additions of the earthy and floral Fuggles and East Kent Golding hops, this pale amber English IPA is perfect for those seeking an IPA that is not just all about the hops, but rather a restorative drinking experience with a little extra to chew on. Cheers.

  3. The League "Cold As Ice" - Cold IPA
    $86.00

The League "Cold As Ice" - Cold IPA

Cold As Ice is a recipe created for The League of Brewers by Jamie McQuillan of Cell Division Brewery, keeping firmly in mind Wayfinder’s description of what a cold IPA (“the anti-thesis of a NEIPA’) should be and how they should ideally be made. This recipe also draws upon his own drinking experience (the best part right?) and a preference for the hop character of a classic dank west coat IPA. The resulting beer is a showcase of an awesome trio of hops (Simcoe, Centennial and Amarillo) delivering punchy pine and citrusy grapefruit notes.

Typically, cold IPAs are brewed with an adjunct lager malt bill as the base, helping to produce a crisp dry finish perfect for showcasing the hops. For simplicity, removing the need to pre-process the unmalted grains, this recipe utilises dextrose (corn sugar) to the same effect.

Pouring a straw colour, fermented clean with a lager yeast at restrained temperatures and packed full of whirlpool and dry hop aroma, Cold As Ice finishes with a firm bitterness that should satisfy any drinker who appreciates both lagers and IPAs.

The League "Chameleon" - American IPA Recipe Kit

We originally partnered with our good friends at Lallemand to bring you a special promotion - it proved so popular that we sold out so we've decided to keep it going without the free yeast (sorry!).

This recipe is designed to be in keeping with the 2021 BJCP Style guide 21A: American IPA.

Chameleon is a recipe created for The League of Brewers by Jamie McQuillan of Cell Division Brewery. It is built upon the foundations of a classic American (West Coast) IPA, “ a decidedly hoppy and bitter, moderately strong, pale American ale”, but with a couple of twists to showcase both a new hybrid yeast and a new hop variety.

The recipe is built upon a bill of American Ale malt with just a touch of specialty malt to gently support and allow the hops to shine. The beer is fermented with Lallemand’s newly released hybrid yeast, Pomona™ . Among other attributes, Pomona™  possesses an enhanced capacity for the biotransformation of hop terpenes to produce a unique and juicy flavour profile with notes of peach, citrus, and tropical fruits. The arrival of Pomona™  was perfectly timed allowing us to also showcase the newly arrived KrushTM (HBC 586 ) hops from Yakima Chief hops. This new US hop delivers a unique array of citrus, tropical, stone fruit and berry notes which pair beautifully with the much loved Mosaic hops.

Expect a classic West Coast style IPA, clean crisp and firmly bitter with a punchbowl full of delicious new world hop flavours and aromas.

  5. The League "Millions of Peaches" - Southern IPA Recipe Kit
    $95.00

The League "Millions of Peaches" - Southern IPA Recipe Kit

Taking a break from currently described styles, this recipe has not been designed to be consistent with the any of the 2021 BJCP Style guide, and while it does fall under the ever-broadening umbrella of American IPA, American in character it is not. Southern NZ, it most definitely is.

In March of 2025, the first Battle of the Southern IPA's competition was judged at Smiths Craft Beer House in Queenstown. The event was organised by Garston Hops, growers of hops in Garston, in the deep depths of the South Island. The concept of a Southern IPA was that it should be light bodied and easy drinking. Southern grown malts deliver just enough toasty caramel character to support a big hop flavour and aroma that showcases southern grown hops.

Jamie, while a southerner himself and residing in Dunedin, was raised and spent a good deal of time working on the land in Nelson. He saw fit to jump on the opportunity to bring you this new recipe and a more northern twist on to the Southern IPA.

Millions of Peaches is a recipe designed to showcase the wonderful new Peacharine hops from Freestyle hops. Delivering a bold peach/nectarine character with an appealing citrus backbone, Peacharine hops are paired beautifully with the terpene rich hops, Southern Cross and Motueka. Firm bittering is supported with a soft malt background. Deep golden in colour, it is light and easy drinking for any time of the year, but also perfect drinking heading into the early winter months. Cheers to the south.
