Questions & answers
What equipment do I need to brew and bottle my first batch of beer?
A basic extract batch needs a large pot (at least 3 US gallons, about 11 litres), a fermenter with a lid and a matching airlock and stopper, food-grade tubing with a clamp for siphoning, a bottle filler, a floating thermometer, bottles, a hand capper and new caps. A bottle brush helps with cleaning bottles. Everything that touches the beer also needs sanitiser. A starter kit groups much of this as a matched set, and kegging, temperature control and pumps are upgrades you can add later.
What should I use to sanitise brewing equipment?
Anything that touches the beer after the boil, including the fermenter, airlock, tubing, bottle filler, bottles and caps, needs sanitising because beer is prone to infection. Brewing sanitisers such as iodophor or Star San are made for the job. Household bleach also works, but it must be rinsed off thoroughly. Clean off visible residue first, then follow the dilution and contact time on the sanitiser's label.
