Questions & answers

What do I need besides a keg to serve homebrew on tap?

A keg on its own does not dispense anything. You also need a CO2 cylinder with a regulator to set the serving pressure, a gas line and a beer line made from food-grade tubing, a gas disconnect and a beer disconnect that match your keg's fittings, and a tap such as a picnic tap, a tower or a jockey box. Replace the O-rings on a second-hand keg so it seals properly. Choose one fitting style for all your kegs so the disconnects are interchangeable. Kegerators, jockey boxes and tap towers are the options for keeping the beer cold while serving.

Which type of keg suits home brewing: Cornelius, PET or mini keg?

A Cornelius (ball lock) keg is the usual choice for serving beer, cider and other drinks at home and takes standard ball lock disconnects. A PET keg is a plastic alternative, and some models double as a pressure fermenter so you can ferment and serve in the same vessel. Mini kegs suit small batches and portable serving. A commercial stainless keg uses a spear and coupler instead of ball lock fittings, so it needs a matching coupler. Kegmenters are larger kegs with a wide lid for fermenting under pressure as well as serving. Pick by batch size, whether you want to ferment in the keg, and how much you want to carry.
