Questions & answers
What parts do I need to put together a working beer tap?
A faucet is only one part. A standard chrome or stainless faucet is sold without a shank or handle, so you also need a shank to pass through the fridge door or tower, a handle for the faucet lever, and a tail piece to connect the beer line. The tail piece is held to the shank with a 5/8 inch hex nut and a washer. Match the tail piece to your beer line size, for example 1/4 inch or 3/16 inch. If you would rather not assemble parts, a picnic tap kit comes with the keg connector, hose and tap already matched.
Should I choose a picnic tap, or a shank-mounted tap or beer tower?
A picnic tap is a hand-held tap on the end of a beer line. It is the quickest and cheapest way to serve from a keg, and it suits mini kegs, portable serving and a basic kegerator or keezer. A shank-mounted tap, or a beer tower with one or two taps, is a fixed installation: it looks like a bar tap and keeps the faucet at a set height for everyday pouring, but it takes more parts and some drilling or a purpose-built tower. Choose a picnic tap to start simply or to move around, and a shank or tower for a permanent home bar.
