Questions & answers

Should I choose an immersion chiller or a counterflow chiller?

An immersion chiller is a coil you place in the hot wort in your kettle and run tap water through, so it cools the batch in the kettle before you transfer it. A counterflow chiller cools the wort as you transfer it from the kettle to the fermenter, with the water and wort flowing past each other, so transferring and cooling happen in one step. The Grainfather Counterflow Chiller, for example, is designed to cool to within about 3C of your source water temperature and comes with tap adapters for garden hoses, while the Copper Immersion Wort Chiller comes with a garden hose fitting and clear vinyl tubing.

Which type of chiller suits brews with heavy hop additions?

Heavy hop additions can clog compact plate-style chillers. The Coolossus 2.1 stainless steel counterflow chiller is able to withstand high hop additions without clogging, and it uses 1.5 inch Tri Clover fittings on the wort line with 1/2 inch BSPT connectors on the water side. Alternatively an immersion coil sits in the kettle rather than having wort pass through it, so it is not affected in the same way.
