This recipe was not specifically designed to be consistent with the BJCP style guides, but we believe it is similar to 19B - California Common.
This beer style was made famous by Anchor Brewing Company in San Francisco. The "Anchor Steam" was one of the first beers to bring some flavour into the bland American lager landscape back in the 70s. It featured complex malt flavours combined with some rustic traditional American hops. Very drinkable, this is a style you'll struggle to find in the commercial market in NZ.
ABV: 5.8%
Our kits are fresh! We assemble the ingredients after you place your order. The grain bill will be milled, unless you tell us in your order comments that you prefer it not to be.
This recipe has been designed to use acid malt to reach the target mash pH. If you wish to use the recommended mineral additions to achieve the intended flavour profile, these are to be added to the boil only. This kit does not include the minerals, but these can be purchased separately.

- Great recipe/kit and even better with demise of Anchor Brewing

Brewed this in March 2023 and absolutely love it. Back to the US in June and grabbed a few bottles of Anchor Steam (with the ugly new label).
Saw the news then that Anchor were only going to distribute in California and then the news today (13 July) that Anchor is shutting down.
I like this recipe better. To me it tastes like a cross between Anchor Steam and Redhook Rye. Redhook is, alas, long gone after being acquired by Miller or such. The rye in the malt makes it a far more interesting beer and oh so drinkable. I will be brewing this again. - Better than current Anchor Steam
- 6 July 2023 Brewed this in March 2023. Back to the US in June and bought some Anchor Steam. This recipe is head and shoulders above Anchor Steam as currently brewed, bottled and distributed. Even more important now that they will limit distribution to California only. This reminds me of the first Anchor Steam I had in the early 90s and also a bit like RedHook Rye. Perfect recipe that I’ll be brewing regularly.
